Keep Learning

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

During the last few months, I have been learning more about videography. Everything from storytelling, equipment, editing, lighting and the list goes on. Videography is something very complex and when done right, taken for granted. When you watch a good video, you might hit the like button and move on to the next video. However, when you watch a video that has an unclear message/story, awful lighting or audio, it stands out. And not in a good way.

I have been creating more videos and I am working on getting better at telling an interesting story. I have been researching professionals, vloggers, production websites and everyone says the same thing:

It is not about the equipment but about the story.

The why. Why does this matter and who cares? With that in mind, I know I have a long way to go. Storytelling through video is such a game-changer. You have the ability to tell a story in so many ways. There are so many things to consider and while it can be overwhelming, it has been such an amazing learning experience.

I made a couple of videos this week and have received a wide range of feedback.

While it is not always easy to hear, it is really a wonderful learning opportunity.

Previously, I worked at a company where feedback was given directly and my younger self took the words to heart and a bit too personal. As I have gained more life and work experience, I have come to realize that feedback is a gift. A gift that should not be taken for granted. No matter the way of delivery, there is always a lesson to be learned.

The “why” of this post is a reminder to you (but mainly myself) that we should come with an open mind and an open heart when someone gives us feedback. Feedback is just that. Feedback. We have the choice to take it in and learn from it.

For all those who have shared with me your thoughts, given me pointers and recommendations – thank you so much.
