“The way of the world is meeting people through other people,” Robert Kerrigan.
When I was growing up, my father used to always tell me to succeed in this world, it is not only what you know but who you know. At the age of 10, I learned quickly how relationships with people can really help or hurt you in your personal and professional life. I have been really blessed by having so many great people in my life who have given me advice and guidance in furthering my personal and career goals. I am not an “expert ” by any means, I am learning every day as well! However I would like to pass on some tips that I have learned, hoping that this can help those just starting out:
1. Smile + handshake
2. State where you work and what you do
3. Give one fun fact about yourself (memorable)
4. Listen and absorb
5. Following up + keep in touch
Another important tip is to always be genuine and be caught up on the latest news and headlines. It comes in handy when you new boss asks about the UH game, or your co-worker talking about fashion week. Know your stuff!
